Dr.Leuner obtained her Doctoral and  Master’s degrees from Boston College, her Baccalaureate Degree from Seton Hall University in N.J., and a diploma in nursing from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in NYC, NY. 

Dr. Leuner is the founding dean and professor at the University of Central Florida (UCF), College of Nursing. Prior to her position at UCF, Dr. Leuner was the Associate Dean for Academics and Evaluation at the Medical University of South Carolina where she commenced academic programs, provided leadership for faculty practice and several grants to support school based health clinics.  From 1985-1996, Dr. Leuner served in several nursing leadership positions at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. At that time it was a new multidisciplinary health professions school located at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Leuner maintained her clinical practice at MGH while providing leadership in nursing education at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Dr. Leuner has taught students at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral level and has held administrative positions in nursing education for more than twenty years. She has published over twenty articles in the area of quality of life, information fluency, and nursing education and she is an invited presenter nationally and internationally. Dr. Leuner has been the primary investigator or co-investigator for over 37 grants and awards totaling over $19 million.  She has received numerous honors and awards for her work in nursing education. She was honored as a “Woman Who Means Business” from the Orlando Business Journal, and in 2012 she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing and the Hall of Fame at Seton Hall University.  Dr. Leuner has raised more than $6 million at UCF to support faculty, students and the college including 2 endowed chairs and 3 endowed professorships. At UCF, she commenced 4 new academic programs, 2 new master’s tracks, an innovative ASN to BSN Program with 3 schools and quadrupled enrollment in the RN to BSN program. She moved the college to a new building,  established an alumni association, formalized an undergraduate honors program, obtained more than 30 endowed scholarships and endowed funds to support global work and doctoral students to name just a few of her accomplishments.

Dr. Leuner has served on the Board of Directors for AACN. She is a team leader, site visitor and newly appointed member of the Substantive Change Advisory Group for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  She is a member of the Board of Trustees for Winter Park Health Foundation in Florida.  She is Past-President of Sigma Theta Tau at the University of Central Florida and state delegate for the Florida Nurses Association.
